I met with Nate Wilbourne, 2025 Young New Zealander of the Year semi-finalist and a passionate advocate for youth voice in politics. We talked about something that should concern every young person in Tasman.
In the 2022 local elections:
Only 55% of 18–24 year olds in Tasman were even enrolled to vote — just 2,231 people.
Meanwhile, 99.5% of people aged 70+ were enrolled — over 10,000 voters.
That’s a massive generational imbalance. Decisions about climate, affordable housing, public transport, jobs, and debt are being made – largely by and for older generations – while too many young people are shut out or staying silent.
This isn’t just a numbers game. It’s a wake-up call!
If you’re under 30, your future is on the line. Enrol. Vote. Run for council. Let’s change the story.
